Friesian  History

The Friesian horse is unique, truly a breed to be proud of. It’s developed from a very old breed which was inherent to all of Western Europe. It's the only horse native to Holland. Historically speaking, the Friesian horse has been influenced by eastern bloodlines and has often been threatened with extinction.

At one time, the number of registered Friesian Horses became even less than one thousand and the fate of the breed was uncertain.  In fact, the number of Friesian Stallions reputedly was reduced to only three, prior to World War I.  Thanks to the dedication of  Friesian horse lovers and Breeders in Friesland, a northern province of Holland, one can still appreciate the many facets of the Friesian horse today.

Breeding is done under STRICT guidelines such as selection, performance testing and classification to ensure the quality of the breed remains VERY high. Inbreeding is tracked closely The "Friesch Paarden Stambook" (Friesian Horse Registry) dates back to 1879.  UNTIL 1943, BOTH purebred AND crossbred Friesian Horses were registered.

The Friesian horse is enjoying a revival. He is a beautiful  sight in the show ring. His shiny black coat, flying mane and tail, and high action form is a  memorable picture. The Friesian is, by nature, a talented show horse.

Without a doubt, the black coat of the Friesian will impress you at first sight. Bays and grays occurred earlier in the breed, but now black is the only recognized color. A small white forehead star is also allowed. Other obvious characteristics are the long, heavy mane and tail and the Shire-like fetlock hair.

The modern day Friesian has enjoyed it's share of publicity, regularly being seen  in movies such as LadyHawke, Interview with a Vampire, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Disney's Tall Tales and Mask of Zorro

Friesian Crossbreeds

Friesian crossbreeding has become very popular in recent years, combining the best attributes of two or more breeds. Popular breeds for crossbreeding to attain certain athletic qualities and stamina include: Percheron, Shire, Thoroughbred, Saddle bred, Arab, Pinto, Quarter Horse and others. The Friesian crossbreed is an attempt to get as many Friesian attributes as possible, such as temperament, movement, color, heads up, mane and tail thickness and length, and feathers on the fetlock. If your mare has very little tail and mane, the mane and tail of your foal my be somewhere in between. Or the foal  may take after the sire or dam exclusively. This follows suit with other attributes as well. You are not guaranteed a totally Friesian looking foal with a crossbreed.

Testimonials:

Ali and Debbie  Centralia, Wa

Hi John & Janna,  Just wanted to drop you a few lines and let you know what a wonderful experience this has been. My daughter & I started out not knowing a thing about AI'ing a mare. And you were wonderful walking us thru the process. Still can't believe when I called you at 4:00 our time, 6:00 your time, and told you we needed the semen you got it to us by 8:15 the next morning  WOW.  We had the mare AI at 9:30 and everything went great. We only had her AI'ed the one time, and now with the ultra sounds done we have a bred mare, she is in foal. And I must say, to the most fertile and beautiful stallion. We couldn't be more excited, now the long wait till next year when our baby will be born. And a chance to breed her back to your wonderful stallion again next year.   Thank You so very much.

Dear Eisenbart Family,

I want to thank you for an efficient and successful breeding season.  I have been breeding horses for about 10 years. Nearly all of those Breedings utilized cooled or frozen semen. No one else has offered the ease of service and cost efficiency that you do!

Anyone breeding horses via shipped semen needs to be VERY aware of the “extra” cost that can sometimes come with a breeding fee. Besides my two breeding to “Apollo,” I used one other stallion this year.  “Apollo’s” stud fee was complete…what I paid was all that I owed.  With the other stallion I used, the collections were all done at a separate veterinary hospital. I had to pay for those services on top of my stud fee. That vet charged over $400 to collect and ship. By the end of the season I had paid more in veterinary fees than I paid for the stud fee! As fate would have it, only one of my two mares got in foal!! I have a “free” re-breed to this other stallion for next year, but will again be responsible for the exorbitant fee the stallion owner’s vet charges to collect him. This experience really showed me how valuable it is to have a stallion that is collected and shipped by his owners.

Thank you again for a successful breeding season. My own veterinarian commented on how professionally and quickly the shipments arrived from your ranch. I am excitedly waiting for my two new babies by Apollo!  I highly recommend Royal Knight Friesians.

                                                            Regards, Ann Hamilton (Texas)

JOHN AND JANNA,

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GREAT THE TWO OF YOU WERE TO WORK WITH.
I CALLED YOU WITH A PROBLEM MARE THAT WE JUST COULDN'T SEEM TO GET IN FOAL. I HAD TALKED TO JOHN AND TOLD HIM THAT SHE WAS READY TO BREED THAT DAY. HE DROOPED EVERYTHING AND CAME AND GOT HER THAT DAY. WE BREED AND I WAS SURE WE HAD GOTTEN HER. AS IT CAME BACK WE DIDN'T. I TOOK HER BACK TO YOU AND YOU FOUND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND MADE DARN SURE WE GOT HER THE NEXT TIME. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU TOOK A VIDEO OF MY BABY! HOW SWEET WAS THAT. WHEN I CAME BACK OUT TO GET HER SHE WASN'T SO SURE SHE WANTED TO LEAVE. SHE WAS JUST AS FAT AND SASSY AS WHEN I GAVE HER TO YOU. THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR TRYING SO HARD FOR US. AFTER TRYING 3 TIMES WITH ANOTHER BREEDER AND SPENDING SO MUCH IT WAS WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH YOU AND HAVE YOU CALL ME AND TELL ME EVER STEP OF THE WAY WHAT WAS GOING ON. I JUST CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DID. NOW FOR THE BEST PART. THE WAITING FOREVER AND PICKING OUT NAMED FOR OUR PRETTY BABY.
